WWSEF AWARD DESCRIPTIONS
This list varies yearly and may not match the awards given at the current Fair, but it will give you an idea of what could be available for the entrants.

Category and Division Awards
When entries meet certain standards, gold, silver and bronze level prizes may be awarded in each of the 15 category/divisions.

Each award consists of a gold, silver or bronze medal plus a cash prize as indicated in the chart.

In the case of group projects, individual medals/certificates will be awarded, but the cash prize will be shared.

Honourable Mention Certificatesare also awarded to all deserving projects.

A "Best of Division" plaque is awarded to the entry judged best among division gold level winners in each of the five divisions. The selection of the winner(s) of these awards takes into account the ages and grades of the entrants being compared.

AWARDS of MERIT and The AWARD of EXCELLENCE
I. Awards of Merit.
Awards of Merit go to the top projects in the fair. The prize is an all expenses paid trip to the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Invitations to apply for membership in Team Canada at the International Science and Engineering Fair are made at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Several students from our area have been selected in past years.
II. Award of Excellence.
One of the winners of the Awards of Merit is selected as the top exhibit in the fair.

III. The Best Entry Award.
A plaque is presented to the school attended by the winner of the Award of Excellence.

SPECIAL AWARDS    (These awards vary annually.)
Best Written Report Awards.
Sponsored by the Perimeter Institute, Waterloo
A pen-set is awarded in each of the three categories - junior, intermediate and senior, for the best written Research Report. The report should be a concise summary of the science project, including background, purpose and hypothesis, procedure, results and conclusions and acknowledgments. Elements of both style and content are considered.

Sir Isaac Newton Award
The University of Waterloo Department of Physics awards a $50 gift certificate to the exhibit, in each of the three categories, that is judged to be the best project with an emphasis on physics.

Chem 13 Award.
The Department of Chemistry, University of Waterloo, sponsors an award for the exhibit judged to be best one with an emphasis on chemistry. The award is a one year subscription to Scientific American or another scientific journal suitable for the level of the award winner.

Stephen J. Little Presentation Award
Stephen J. Little founded the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair. For many years he was the driving force required to get the Fair established. He continued to work with the Fair until he passed away in 2003.
The award is presented to the student who exibits the most creativity and effectiveness in the presentation of the project.

Conestoga College Scholarships
The Conestoga College awards a $500 admission scholarship to all Grade 11-12 Gold Medal Winners which becomes active upon successful registration at the College.

University of Guelph Scholarships
The University of Guelph awards a $1000 admission scholarship to all Grade 11-12 Gold Medal Winners which becomes active upon successful registration at the University of Guelph.

University of Waterloo Scholarships
The University of Waterloo awards a $1000 admission scholarship to selected Grade 11-12 Gold Medal Winners which becomes active upon successful registration at the University of Waterloo.

Wilfrid Laurier University Scholarships
The Wilfrid Laurier University awards a $1000 admission scholarship to all Grade 11-12 Gold Medal Winners which becomes active upon successful registration at Wilfrid Laurier University.

McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Entrance Prize
Mohawk College awards a $2000 admission prize to all Grade 11-12 Gold Medal Winners which becomes valid upon successful registration in the McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology program.
YSF Canada Sponsored Regional Awards
The Youth Science Foundation Canada co-ordinates several national awards sponsored by various organizations. For each award, regional science fairs may select nominees. In addition to the prize offered by the sponsoring organization, winners' names and project titles are forwarded to YSF Canada. These awards vary from year to year.

AECL, Intel, and Shell contribute money through YSF which is used to help pay the cost of entrants to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories Award
The award is for an outstanding project incorporating analytical laboratory methods.

Youth Science Ontario Stepping Stone Award.
Youth Science Ontario provides a travel award consisting of a cheque for $1,500, to be used by the region to help cover the costs of sending one student to the CWSF. Each region will select the recipient based on its own criteria. Regions that are not sending their maximum number of students are encouraged to use this award to increase their representation. Regions already sending their maximum can use the award to subsidize a student and direct the resulting savings elsewhere in their program. Each region is required to identify the recipient of this award to Youth Science Ontario and acknowledge Youth Science Ontario as the source of the funding at their awards ceremony.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology Award
Awarded to two projects demonstrating the most innovative development, adaptation, or use of technology in any subject area. Only one award can go to a senior category project.

Hydro One Award
Awarded to a project showing outstanding scientific quality with a primary focus on distribution, supply, use, or conservation of electrical energy.

Environmental Innovator Award
Awarded to a project which demonstrates a creative approach to an environmental problem that could lead to cleaner air, land, or water.

University of Ottawa Entrance Scholarship
The faculties of Engineering, Science and Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa award a $1000 admission scholarship to the most outstanding senior category project from each region.
